Eden is East

STAGE : Post production

During the first month of the Ukraine war, a young man travels to the Romanian/Ukraine border. He hopes to discover an ideal of life that he can no longer find in France.

This film follows the man as he discovers the tremendous work that the people of Romania are doing. Through phone calls with his sister, Charlie, we watch as he goes from being in awe of the actions to questioning the motives. Though he never believes that anyone has bad intentions, he can’t help but think that the people behind the solidarity movement have their own unconscious agenda to better themselves. Through his observations and discussion with people from varied backgrounds, he discovers a country that is fighting for its reputation. Largely in the eyes of the west. A country that is proud of its people and wants to “bury any lasting misconceptions brought on by the thieves, Ceaușescu, or the orphanages of the 80s” to quote the Maire of a small border town.

After a couple of weeks of witnessing the actions throughout Romania, our protagonist returns home. During his drive back, he calls his sister one last time. As he explains the wider mission of the people of Romania, he sounds relieved that their selfless acts of solidarity are partly selfish. To him, they seem more honest, and just as honorable.
